John G. Hofmann is a graduate of the Boston University School of Law (cum laude), and the University of Virginia.

John's practice at Gilman, McLaughlin & Hanrahan is focused on civil litigation, mainly in Massachusetts state courts. He represents, among others: individuals and families; companies, big and small; a local non-profit scientific organization; several automobile dealerships; and many residential landlords.

He has extensive experience with appellate practice in the Massachusetts state courts. He handles cases involving a range of real estate and land use issues, including: landlord-tenant cases, zoning disputes, and adverse possession. He handles employment-related litigation and counsels employers on employment issues (such as wages, sick time, leave, and suits brought by employees). He has represented many professionals and licensees (including accountants, social workers, psychologists, an architect, and a massage therapist) with their disciplinary cases before the Massachusetts state Division of Occupational Licensure. He also files the occasional federal trademark application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to law school in Boston, he taught English in Japan for three years, in Fukui Prefecture (pronounced "fuh-koo-ee" - not the way you're probably thinking), and then worked in the hospitality industry in Sydney, Australia for a bit. After law school at BU, he was a Judicial Law Clerk for the Late Honorable John H. Mason at the Massachusetts Appeals Court.

He currently resides in Newton, Massachusetts, with his wife, two sons, and two cats.
