We Believe in the Value of a General Practice
The legal landscape today is dominated by three types of offices. First, there is the mega-firm with its international offices, high rise location and promise of 5 lawyers working on your case. Of course there is also the accompanying $400/hr. billing rates for second year lawyers and the problem that they are probably the ones to whom you will regularly speak. Next, there is the solo practitioner or small suburban practice which can close your house purchase, draft a simple will, and, in some cases, handle limited civil or criminal court work. Often they can handle certain areas but as to others they are limited to knowing where to find the form they need. Finally there is what has come to be called the "boutique" law firm, one which specializes in one thing only and does it quite well. Great if you need a patent issued, collection of an overdue bill, or to file for bankruptcy. However, these attorneys are rarely what the majority of clients need and because of their extreme specialization they are never able to develop into the personal attorney you need for all of the legal issues which arise in a lifetime.
What is increasingly hard to find is what we are. We are a medium size general practice comprised of top attorneys who are individually and collectively familiar with multiple disciplines. As a result, we not only successfully and efficiently complete the work but from the outset our attorneys will view the issues in your case from a broader perspective than will the "specialists" at the Boutique firm or the "department" to which the mega-firm assigns your case.
What this means for you is more than the fact that we don't need 5 lawyers consulting as a "team" to solve your problem. It means that the lawyers you do work with will be able to anticipate issues and often devise the less obvious strategy or solution which can save time and money as well as result in a more favorable outcome.
While of course not every lawyer at Gilman, McLaughlin & Hanrahan does exactly the same thing, each knows enough about the complementary areas of the law to spot and resolve most issues which will arise in the resolution of your matter. More important to you, those potential problems are found before you sign the purchase and sale or commercial lease, not when your lender finds them a week before closing. Your lawsuit can be analyzed - from what is likely to happen to whether it is worth the effort at all - before you are so involved your options have been eliminated. Frequently, strategies are developed so that you do not need a lawsuit at all.
We are significantly more useful to the average client than a boutique firm and far more efficient and cost-effective than a mega firm. We don't need to staff up with lawyers from six different specialties to work on your case. Because one attorney can handle a wide variety of issues, communication is simple, attorney time is used effectively and a vastly less expensive, but highest quality, result is provided.

Almost every lawyer in our firm is a partner. When you meet with one of us, you are talking to the partner who will be handling your case. We don't have associates return our phone calls and we won't have partners deal with you just for appearances. Each client's individual goals are carefully established and rigorously pursued.
